Act 4- Riddles & Images

In the first riddle, the first apparition warns Macbeth to stay away from Macduff. In my image, I drew Macduff on the left chasing a smaller man on the right who is Macbeth. I decided to draw Macduff larger in size because it puts an emphasis on how frightening and intimidating Macduff can be. I decided to draw Macbeth smaller to show how Macduff is the more dominate one between the two. Even though Macbeth is King, Macduff seems to have a lot more power as he has support from the King Edward of England. The sign reading "Beware of Macduff"is used to show how Macbeth does not follow rules and warnings and will go through extreme measures to get what he desires. For example, in order to secure his throne, he hired murderers to kill Macduff's family even though they were not part of their politics. In the end, I think that because of Macbeth's poor decisions and actions that he follows through with it will result in exactly what this picture portrays.

The second apparition instructs Macbeth to stay confident and violent. Also, Macbeth should mock the power of anyone born from a women as they will never ever be able to lay a finger on him. I drew Macbeth on a throne up in the clouds to portray the fact that he cannot be harmed by any of the men on Earth as they all came into this world from a women. Drawing King Macbeth in a higher position than the rest of the people shows that he is of a higher class and that they are inferior to him. I decided to add comments to the common people on the bottom of the image because it further stresses the confidence of the King. Although in the actual play, the citizens don't necessarily like Macbeth. However, the image shows what Macbeth may assume of the citizens which further boosts his ego and confidence.

Finally in the last apparition  they tell Macbeth to always be brave and courageous and to never worry about the haters and those who will conspire him. He will not be conquered by anyone except for the woods of Great Birnam. I decided to draw Macbeth within a bubble to show that his thoughts and his personal feeling would not be harmed by anyone outside of the bubble and in this case, society. Macbeth is slightly larger in size than the rest of the people in the picture because this show that Macbeth is only somewhat of a higher class. He is not as praised by society therefore Macbeth is no longer significantly more powerful than the rest of the people. I think this quote is foreshadowing what is to come. Although the apparition states that no one will be able to beat Macbeth except for the woods of Great Birnam, which is impossible because they are inanimate objects, I think that Macbeth will be deprived of his throne later in the story.

Act 2- Live Tweeting

Twitter is a quite a popular social media website that allows you to connect with your favourite celebrities, friends and even receive the latest news right when it happens.  This social media website is interesting in a way that anyone, and everyone is able to express their thought as it comes to mind for the world to see and this is what I was able to do while portraying Lady Macbeth. It was fun to be able to think from the character's point of view and to think of a tweet that would go along with the situation at the moment. My tweets that I came out with however, did not match up with the way that the people would talk or express their ideas in the olden days. I liked how twitter was had such a user-friendly interface. It was really easy to navigate around the website. Hash-tags allow you to see what others are saying about the topic. For example if you hash-tagged "#KingMacbeth", you can see what other users worldwide are saying about this topic who have also hash-tagged this. The layout is really easy to use and there are no advertisements on the sides that are present in other social media websites such as Facebook. This website is based on such simplicity yet everyone is so crazy over it. 

What I do not like about the site is that the maximum number of characters one can enter per tweet is only 160. Unlike a Facebook status where you can enter anything from a word to an entire essay, twitter can only allow you to express essentially a thought per tweet.  Once you are registered for an account, you are overwhelmed with the famous such as Britney Spears and Conan O'Brian asking you to follow them. If you do not choose to follow anyone, they will continue to suggest people you should really follow until you do. 

Overall, it was a great experience to use Twitter to really get into the heads of the character!

Act 1- Character Profile

LADY MACBETH

So far, after reading act 1, I know that Lady Macbeth is  a faithful wife to Macbeth. She is ambitious and strives for power and authority. She encourages her husband to kill King Duncan so that he can come into power when Macbeth was doubtful about whether to proceed with the deed or not. 

Lady Macbeth seems to be the more ruthless and cold-hearted one in the relationship. She describes how she would do whatever the task may be if she had promised to do it;

How tender 'tis to love the babe that milks me-
I would, while it was smiling in my face, 
Have plucked my nipple from his boneless gums, 
and dashed the brains out, had I so sworn as you
have done to this. (I.vii.55-59)

Lady Macbeth is courageous and devious. She carefully plans out the assassination of King Duncan. She has the courage to go through with such a dangerous and repulsive deed in order to gain power for her husband when he was acting doubtful. So far, she does not seem to care about the consequences of her actions as long as she gets reaches her goal. 

As a character, I think that she quite evil with plotting to kill a King that has been so good to her husband by giving him the title as Thane of Cawdor. Nonetheless, I understand why she may be doing this. She truly cares for her other half and wants him to have the best life that he could by being King, even if that meant that she had to sacrifice someone else's life. 

Personally, I detest Lady Macbeth. Although she is kind and caring for her other half, she does not care for the well being of others. She will go through drastic measures in order to achieve what she wants even if that mean killing someone. 

Although Lady Macbeth may commit a murder later in the story, her courage to do such a thing may teach us to become more brave and to strive for a our dreams and wishes. (Without doing anything illegal of course!)

Act 1- Role of the Witches

The three witches definitely play an important role in the play.  The witches were the  first characters to be introduced and this shows that their hugely influential in how the plot will progress. I think the witches will have an influence as to how Macbeth will act throughout the story. In the first act, the witches predict that Macbeth will become the Thane of Cawdor and later the King of Scotland. Not long after, King Duncan does announce Macbeth as the new Thane of Cawdor! This gave the idea that Macbeth must eliminate King Duncan in order to fulfill the witches' prophecy. However, the three witches did not tell Macbeth that he had to assassinate the King in order to take his place. Because of the way that Macbeth interpreted it, he comes up with a plan to kill King Duncan.

Already we can see that the witches' first prediction did come true as Macbeth became the new Thane of Cawdor. As the story progresses, I think that the witches' will come up with more predictions that will also influence the way that Macbeth will act and these actions that he goes through with will have a severe consequence. 

In my opinion, I don't think that people are subject to our pre-determined destiny. Our actions today will indeed affect our future in a way. However, the wrong action can lead to a different road, different from your destiny and we never know what the right action is until we actually see it through. For example, as Macbeth plots his murder of the King, he believes that if the King dies, he will become the next King of Scotland but this may not be true.  Some other nobleman might take his place instead of Macbeth. Macbeth might not even be successful in his assassination and in turn he will end up prison. 

I do not believe in destiny. Our actions everyday will influence our future and most of the time, our choices and actions might not lead us down the correct path that we want to walk on but we can change what is to come. Our own future is not set in stone but rather flexible as to what we aspire.

Act 1- Thoughts On the Play


After reading the first act, I know that Macbeth possibly takes place during the medieval times in the country of Scotland. In the beginning, three witches foreshadows that Macbeth who currently was a brave soldier who fought in the war between Scotland and Normandy was to be raised in ranks and eventually will become the King of Scotland. Soon after, King Duncan gives the title Thane of Cawdor to Macbeth. Upon hearing that proclamation, Macbeth envisages the murder of the King in order to turn this prediction into reality. However, he later justifies whether he should actually commit an assassination just to take place but Lady Macbeth tells him that he will not be a man unless he goes through with this. Together they plan to intoxicate King Duncan's body guards with wine until the pass out which they will then plant incriminating evidence of the murder on them. 

I think that this play will only become more and more complicated as the story goes on. There are witches, that can foresee the future and a thane that sprung up such a tactical plan. Even after reading the first act, the characters are so sophisticated and the story line is already so intricate with a plan to murder the king!

I think Macbeth is somewhat subordinate to his wife, Lady Macbeth. For example, when he was confused as to whether he would go through with his plan, Lady Macbeth somewhat implies that if he doesn't act on this plan, he's not a man. "When you durst do it, then you were a man;" (I.vii.49)

In my opinion, Shakespeare literature is somewhat confusing and difficult to understand completely because of the language that he used but with the help of videos of the play it is easier to understand the specific details of the plot. However, his work has been greatly recognized and I think that every one of his plays has a great story line.
